Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
