A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
